What Is A Passport Card?
Knowing the type of travel documentation required is essential when planning a trip. One unique option available is the passport card, which offers specific advantages for certain types of travel.
What Is a Passport Card?
A passport card is a compact, Real ID-compliant identification document. Introduced in 2008 as part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, it enhances security for U.S. border crossings beyond air travel.
Unlike a passport book, which contains pages for visas and stamps, a passport card is similar in size to a driver’s license. It includes your photograph and personal details, making it convenient to carry.
Key Features of a Passport Card
Physical Features: The passport card is a credit card-sized document that displays your photo, name, and other essential details.
Validity Period: For adults, it remains valid for ten (10) years, whereas for minors under 16, it is valid for five (5) years.
Cost: First-time applicants must pay $65 for adults and $50 for children under 16. The renewal fee for adults is $30.
Usage and Limitations
The passport card is ideal for:
Land border crossings between the U.S. and Canada or Mexico.
Sea travel to Caribbean countries, Bermuda, and other destinations via ferry or cruise.
However, it is not accepted for international air travel. It is strictly limited to specific land and sea entry points.
Benefits of a Passport Card
As a cost-effective alternative to a passport book, the passport card is an excellent option for frequent travelers to Canada and Mexico by land. It is also valid for domestic flights, as it meets Real ID requirements. Its compact size allows for easy storage in a wallet alongside other identification cards.
Comparison with Passport Book
Key Differences:
International Travel: A passport book is necessary for all international travel, including air travel. A passport card is only valid for land and sea travel to specific regions.
Size: The passport card is much smaller and more portable than a passport book.
Cost: A passport card is a more affordable option for both application and renewal compared to a passport book.
